Shaolin Goh Chor History 少林五祖拳历史



There are numerous types of Shaolin kung fu in China and many of them are derived from animal forms and other styles to make up one particular style. Goh Chor, to those unfamiliar with Hokkien means 5 ancestors. Shaolin Goh Chor is a combination of The Lohan Monk, The Nun, Thai Chor, Monkey and White Crane. This particular style of Goh Chor was founded by Grandmaster Kan Teck Guan in the late 1800s.

Before the turn of the century, the Emperor of China decided to organise a tournament among the many Kung fu masters to select the best martial artist to train his soldiers. Grandmaster Kan took part in the tournament to become the chief instructor for the military.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Grandmaster Kan, a Chinese medical practicioner, travelled to Singapore and settled there in hope of spreading the art in Southeast Asia. Along with Kung fu, he also brought with him the fighting Green Lion dance which is now incorporated in the current Kung fu training centers around the country.
二十世纪初,精通医药的干宗师,远赴新加坡开设国术馆医局并希望能将这门学术发扬至东南亚。除了医术与拳术,干宗师也把福建青狮与五祖拳结合,成为现今各地的武术会馆广泛运用的武术教材。

In 1932, Grandmaster Kan set up a training center at Club Street, Singapore to teach Kung fu to the public. His second son, Kan Oh Cheong came to Muar and Batu Pahat in the 1950s to set up training centers. In the 1960s, two of Master Kan's students from Muar, Master Chia Chian Koon and Master Tan Ching left the state of Johor and settled in Kuala Lumpur to continue spreading the art. Other schools with active members are located in Singapore, China, Sarawak, Australia, USA and Britain.
